With its classic 85mm medium-telephoto focal length and ultra-fast f/1.4 aperture, this L-series lens is a portraiture powerhouse for full-frame EOS R cameras, bringing subject isolation and beautifully blurred backgrounds within reach. Whether you're freezing expressive moments or capturing stunning bokeh in low light, expect breathtaking sharpness and clarity from edge to edge.
Hybrid Performance for Photo and Video Creation
Engineered for today's content creators, the RF85mm F1.4 L VCM shines in both photography and videography. The advanced VCM (Voice Coil Motor) delivers lightning-fast, silent autofocus, ensuring seamless transitions and smooth tracking—even for demanding video shoots. Video shooters will also appreciate the manual iris control ring, which allows precise, stepless aperture adjustments during recording. Minimal focus breathing and robust optical coatings, including Air Sphere Coating (ASC), guarantee crystal-clear results without distracting ghosting or flare—perfect for high-impact creative projects.
Designed to Withstand Any Environment
As part of Canon's legendary L-series, this lens is built for reliability and longevity. Weather and dust resistance combine with advanced internal seals around critical components, providing peace of mind for outdoor shoots and challenging environments. Practical touches—like a 67mm front filter thread, customizable control ring, and control button—make this lens adaptable to any workflow. With high-quality glass, aspheric elements, and fluorine coatings, every shot is protected from smudges and the elements, ensuring your lens stays clean and ready to perform.
Features
Incredible Feature Set from an Incredible Lens
This lens has a lot going for it. You already know about the new VCM and Iris control ring, but there is so much more. You can attach filters to this lens with a front 67mm screw thread that accepts screw-on filters. You also have a control ring and a control button both of which you can assign functions to. This lens is also dust and weather resistant, has one aspheric lenses, and ASC (Air Sphere Coating) to reduce ghosting.
Time to Focus on Focusing
The RF85mm F1.4 L VCM is part of a series of “hybrid” lenses that focus on video performance as much as still photography. One of these features is a change to how the focus system works. There is a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) that powers the focus unit. This focus motor works at an incredible speed and in near silence. One important note about the VCM is that it requires power to hold its position, so when the camera is off, or the lens is not attached to a camera, you may hear and feel slight movement. This is normal, and there is extra cushioning inside the lens to help prevent damage in this situation.
Excellent Image Quality
Again, thanks to the Canon RF lens mount, the RF85mm F1.4 L VCM lens offers great optical quality. Its optical design includes one UD lens and one aspheric lens as well as Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to reduce ghosting, and Fluorine coating on the front and rear lens surfaces to help mitigate smudges. On top of that, this lens features the same dust- and water-resistance found on L-series lenses with seals around the Control ring, focus ring, zoom ring, operation panel, and lens mount.
Let’s Get Moving on the Conversation About Videos!
This lens is part of a family of “hybrid” lenses that focus on video creation as much as still photography. To that end, this lens features a manual iris control ring so you can smoothly change the aperture from f/1.4 to f/16 during video capture. Thanks to advancements in lens design, focus breathing on this lens is extremely minimal, and backlit images are sharp. Combine all of these features, and you’ve got a great video lens in your hands.
Get Close
With a minimum focus distance of just under 2.5 feet, an f/1.4 aperture, and a uniquely portrait look you can capture some really compelling imagery that is sure to capture attention.
California customers
Proposition 65 WARNING
WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm

Specifications
General
Color
Black
Compatibility
Canon
Type
Medium Telephoto
Filter Size
67mm
Lens Elements
14
Lens Format Coverage
Full Frame
Lens Groups
10
Fixed Focal Length
85mm
Aspherical Elements
1
Maximum Aperture
f/1.4
Fluorine Coat
Yes
Super Integrated Coating
Canon SSC (Super Spectra Coating), Fluorine coating, Canon ASC (Air Sphere Coating)
Minimum Aperture
f/ 16
AF Actuator
VCM
Minimum Focus Distance
2.46 ft
Maximum Magnification
0.12x
Lens Mount Compatibility
Canon RF-Mount
Angle of View
28º 30'
Focus Type
Auto/Manual
Aperture Blades
11
Lens Construction
14 elements in 10 groups
Special Elements
1 UD Lens, 1 Aspheric Lens
Dust/Water Resistant
Yes
In the Box
1 x Canon VCM Lens, 1 x Lens Hood, 1 x Lens Cap, 1 x Lens Case, 1 x Dust Cap
Focusing System
VCM
Approximate Dimensions
Length (in)
3.9
Package Size HxWxL (in)
6 x 6 x 11
Warranty Information
Labor Warranty
1 Year Limited
Parts Warranty
1 Year Limited
Approximate Weight
Unit Weight (lbs.)
1.4
Package Weight (lbs)
3
